Why doesn't my business show up when people ask ChatGPT? An honest FAQ

More customers are asking AI — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google's AI — to recommend a business, and a lot of owners are noticing they never get mentioned. Here's what's going on, in plain English.
Are people really using AI to find businesses now?
Increasingly, yes. In the US, 68% of Google searches now end without a click (SparkToro/Similarweb, 2026) — people get their answer from AI right there on the page — and the same shift is well underway in the UK. Meanwhile 25% of UK businesses now use AI, up from around 10% in 2023 (ONS, January 2026).
So why doesn't my business come up?
AI answer engines are cautious by design. They recommend businesses they can clearly understand, that independent sources agree on, and that feel safe to suggest. If your details are thin or inconsistent across the web, AI often just leaves you out rather than risk a wrong recommendation.
Isn't this just SEO with a new name?
Not quite. Traditional SEO chases rankings and keywords. Getting recommended by AI is about your business as an entity — how clearly and consistently you're described everywhere. We call the method Entity Confidence Engineering, and it works across five things: clarity, consensus, answer-readiness, risk reduction and context.
What can I actually do about it?
Start with the basics: one clear description of who you are, what you do and where; the same story on your website, directories and reviews; and content written the way people actually ask questions (like this FAQ). Small, consistent fixes build AI's confidence over time.
How do I find out where I stand?
Ask an AI a question your ideal customer would ask, and see whether you appear. Or get a free AI visibility check as part of our readiness audit — we'll show you your weakest area and the single highest-impact fix.
